The International Yacht Training eLearning course is an introduction to the main theory items that the skipper of a small yacht should be aware of. The course is divided into the 14 sections outlined below with a few short self test questions at the end to ensure that people have understood the content. On completion of all sections, you will get a final assessment where you have to answer questions on all the topics in one go.
You can re do each section as many times as you want, and also re do the final assessment, so this is not something that you can fail.
The purpose of the eLearning is to ensure that people have a basic knowledge of each of the topics. The level of detail is just the minimum required, and you can study each section in a lot more detail if you wish, and you will find many books written on each individual subject. As you start skippering then, you can add your knowledge as required, and if for example you started to sail in an area with strong tides, you would have to do more study on that particular topic.
The time taken to complete the course will depend on your prior knowledge. Someone that is already familiar with most of the topics, may do the entire course in one session of just a few hours while others may prefer to do one section at a time, and take a lot longer to finish it.
A single section can usually be covered in 15 to 30 minutes, but the important thing is to understand what it is all about and to retain the main information. When you subsequently do the practical training and assessment, then you will also have to do another written Multiple Choice type exam on the theory. This is normally done at the end of a training week, when you will have had plenty of time to refresh the theory, and experience has shown that most people have no problem in passing this.
